Blogher, a community of women bloggers, is having a conference in Chicago July 27th -July 29th at the Navy Pier. I am seriously considering attending. I love Chicago and the conference sounds awesome.

Here are descriptions about the conference from their site:

This year’s tracks are:

Art of Life: This track is devoted to the passions about which so many of us blog…food, art, photography, crafts, knitting, writing, music and more.

Business of You: This track is devoted to personal and business advancement. We will discuss speaker and media training, self-branding and promotion, mentoring, turning your blog into a book or a business, and even managing your time, your finances, your blogging policies and best practices…the business of you.

Community: This track is devoted to the care and feeding of communities. We’ll discuss building bridges between different online communities, how to galvanize social change with your blogs, and how blogging is a voice for different communities around the world.

Identity: This track is about both the immutable and the dynamic aspects of our lives. Race, gender, age, sexuality, parenting, singledom…many of us blog about who we are, not what we do, and this track will explore your many facets.

Technical: Day One’s technical track focuses on presentations that will help you decided how you want to get your geeky on, while Day Two will be more lab-oriented, so you can get your hands dirty.

If anyone is going to hear Seth Godin, author of The Purple Cow and The Dip, in NYC next week, look for me. I’ll be the redhead listening intently and taking notes so I can blog about it right away!

The Dip – New Marketing Book By Seth Godin

There is a new, and according to some reviews- apparently short, book from Seth Godin, author of one of my favorite books- The Purple Cow. The new book is called The Dip. I found about the book and Seth’s book tour from reading a delightfully fresh blog, www.edithyeung.com. Be sure to check her blog out.

“Seth Godin is releasing a new book called ‘The Dip’. It is a book about quitting. The release of his book is very timely, at least for me. Our society wants us to believe that quitters are losers. I, however, believe quitters are the brave ones. Our society wants us to believe that quitters are lazy. Little do they know how much harder the quitters work after they quit. Our society wants us to conform to its own system of excellence. Little do they know there are numerous alternative systems out there which might work just as well, if not better. I left corporate America 34 days ago. This has been the best dip of my life.”

Do As I Do – Not As I Do

Do as I say not as I do….that is my message today. I haven’t kept up my commitment to blog three times a week and I’d like to explain. I’m moving! I have lived in West Newton for ten and a half years and on February 11th, I looked at a place in Watertown and fell in love. So my every waking moment has been taken up with packing. And sorting. And throwing stuff away or donating it to a local women’s shelter. As an artist and a photographer, I have accumulated so much stuff.

I still have been reading a few books and some blogs- which is a really good place to start if you are considering the “To blog or not to blog” question. Just do a search on Google for the type of business you are in. For example, if you’re in the moving business like my new friend, “Cal”, you might search by inputting the words, “moving” and “blogs” to see what the competition is doing.

And because this blog is about entrepreneur blogs, I will be starting a Blog Link Roll to share the blogs I have found on the Blogosphere, ones that I think might prove useful to you. I’ve noticed many stories about blogging beginning to appear in mainstream publications- the Globe, the Metro, Entrepreneur Magazine and Oprah have all had articles in the last two weeks. It’s like buying a new car and then seeing your type of car everywhere you go…has that ever happened to you? A form of universe synchronicity perhaps?

Anyway, my lunch time is over and I need to pick up my afternoon Starbucks.

Oh before I go, what do you think of the postcard I found in my loft? More tomorrow.

To Blog or Not to Blog

To Blog or Not to Blog…that is the question. Not too long ago, people would ask each other, “Do you have email?” Today’s questions are about blogs, and the main question, “Do you have a blog?” will be heard more and more often as time goes on. Other things to consider are:

Should I blog?
Do I have something to say?
Am I open to libel if I blog?
Should I allow my employees to blog?
What will my employees say if they blog?
What will my clients have to say if they are aware that I have a blog?
What do I have to say to my prospective and present customers?
Am I committed to blogging at least three times a week?

According to sources, a new blog is started every second. Whether or not the blog is read depends on getting the word out to your friends, family, clients and business associates. And your blog will continue to be followed if you are being informative and telling an interesting story. The blog remaining active is your responsibility.

I see blogging as a way to tell your story- the story of your business- why you are starting a business, and what you want to accomplish (besides doing something that you love and making some money). It’s a way to be helpful in the world and a way to open the door of communication to your customers.

Setting up a simple blog can take five to ten minutes and posting a few paragraphs will take a half hour or so- depending on your typing skills and the message you are sharing. In this blog, I hope to share what I am learning about the world of business blogs and to help you answer the question that even Shakespeare, if he were here today, would have to answer: To blog or not to blog?
